Men’s Soccer Shocks Middlebury, 1-0, With Last-Minute Goal

AJ Marcucci

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Middlebury in the NESCAC opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.

After a scoreless first half which saw the Camels outshoot the Panthers, 13-6, and hold a 6-2 edge in corner kick opportunities, senior captain Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) took a free kick and found junior Matt Butera (Westfield, Mass.) for the winning marker with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation. Manoogian's shot was initially stopped by Panther goalkeeper Matthew Hyer, but Butera was able to clean up the rebound.

Sophomore netminder AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.) picked up the shutout victory for Connecticut College by making seven saves. Hyer made nine stops for Middlebury (0-1-1, NESCAC 0-1) in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (2-0) next hosts Endicott on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
