Men’s Soccer Blanks UMass Boston to Stay Undefeated

Liam Noonan

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Uzii Dieng (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.) each found the back of the net to help lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.

Connecticut College (4-0) came out firing and broke through when junior Matt Butera (Westfield, Mass.) found Dieng for a wide-open look in just the ninth minute of the contest. Senior Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) nearly doubled the margin later in the half, but his laser clanked off the post. UMass Boston (2-6), meanwhile, was limited to just a pair of shots that came off of free kicks through the first 45 minutes of play.

The Beacons nearly tied the match up when Jonathan Rodrigues sent a blast at goalkeeper AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.), but the sophomore made the save in the 75th minute to keep the visitors off the board. Shortly afterwards, the pendulum swung the other way and sophomore Liam Noonan (Calabasas, Calif.) found Yeonas for his first career marker on a shot that barely stayed inside the post less than a minute later to provide insurance.

Marcucci made four saves to pick up the win for Connecticut College, which has only surrendered one goal through four matches this season which came on a penalty kick. The Beacons' Omar Castro-Dreher was charged with the setback after making four stops as well.

Connecticut College travels outside of New London for the first time when it visits Trinity for a NESCAC matchup on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
