Women’s Ice Hockey Commences 2018-19 Campaign With 2-2 Tie Against Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Jordan Cross (Saugus, Mass.) scored with less than minutes remaining in regulation to help the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team salvage a 2-2 tie against Amherst in the season opener for both schools at Orr Rink on Friday evening.

Senior Jocelyn Hunyadi wasted no time putting the Mammoths on the board by intercepting a pass and firing the puck past freshman netminder Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) just 1:46 into the contest. Junior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.), however, had an answer in the second period when freshman Catherine Lawrence (Guilford, Conn.) picked up the puck on the side of the net and dished a pass which was finished by the Camel junior. The teams would head into the second intermission deadlocked at one goal apiece.

Amherst (0-0-1, NESCAC 0-0-1) came out strong in the third and nearly got on the board out of the gates again, but Demora turned away McNamara's shot from the right dot to keep the game tied. The Mammoths, however, were able to take a 2-1 lead 5:27 later when McNamara one-timed a pass from Katelyn Pantera which made its way through the right post.

With the teams playing 4-on-4 and the ice more open, the Camels were able to get another equalizer with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Junior Ellie Branka (Medfield, Mass.) received a pass across the blue line from classmate Erin Healy (Melrose, Mass.) and sent the puck to Cross, who redirected it to the far right post to seal the outcome.

Freshman Caitlin Walker racked up 33 saves for Amherst, while the Camels' Denora turned away 16 shots.

Connecticut College (0-0-1, NESCAC 0-0-1) will face off against Amherst again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
