Amherst 2, #18 Connecticut College 1 Steele Supplies First Half Score for Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sloan Askins (Pasadena, Calif.) scored her second goal of the day with 7:49 remaining in regulation to lift the Amherst College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Connecticut College today.

The Purple and White, ranked #4 in New England, improved their record to 10-2-1 while upping their mark to 6-1-1 in the NESCAC. The Camels, ranked #18 in the nation, moved to 9-3 and are 4-3 in conference play.

Connecticut College got on the board in the opening minute of action. Alex Baltazar (Ludlow, Mass.) delivered a cross to Lauren Steele (Westford, Mass.) who booted in her third goal of the season to put the hosts on top. Baltazar's assist was her team leading 20th point of the season for Connecticut College.

But with 5:02 remaining, Askins scored the equalizer when her long ball found its way into the back of the net.

Connecticut College had a couple of terrific opportunities down the stretch. Baltazar nearly stole the game when Amherst had a communication breakdown on a clearing ball from the goal line but her chip sailed just wide. Mia Santana (New London, Conn.) had another terrific scoring opportunity but her shot was cleared out by the Amherst defense near the goal line.

Finally, in the 83rd minute, Amherst took the lead for good when Askins put the finishing touches on a cross from Rubie Tamen (Washington, D.C.) to make it a 2-1 game.

Amherst College sophomore Chelsea Cutler (Westport, Conn.) finished with two saves in the victory for the visitors.

Junior Bryanna Montalvo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made three saves for the hosts.

Prior to the kickoff of Sunday's contest, Connecticut College honored its two seniors, Amanda Proulx (Smithfield, R.I.) and Katelyn Murray (Medfield, Mass.) as they played their final regular season home game here in the Whaling City.
