No. 2 Williams Sneaks by Women’s Soccer

Marielle McEnaney

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team fell to No. 2 Williams by a 1-0 decision in a competitive NESCAC match on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.

Williams (7-0-1, NESCAC 5-0-1) scored the only goal of the match in the final moments of the first half on a throw in. Sarah Scire threw the ball to Rain Condie, and the freshman took a few dribbles before sailing it over the head of junior netminder Sarah Williams (Sherborn, Mass.). It was also the freshman's first collegiate goal.

The Camels, who outshot the Ephs in the first half by an 8-6 margin, had plenty of opportunities to net the equalizer in the second frame. However, the hosts were unable to get anything past goalkeeper Olivia Barnhill. Freshman Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass.) had a good look that sailed just wide in the 70th minute, and Barnhill was able to turn away ensuing attempts by sophomore Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) and junior Kelly Brigham (Norwich, Vt.) to preserve the shutout.

Barnhill made seven saves overall to pick up the shutout victory between the posts for Williams, which had a slim 13-12 advantage in total shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Williams stopped four shots for the Camels and was charged with the loss for surrendering the goal in the late stages of the first half.

Connecticut College (5-3, NESCAC 1-3) will next host Eastern Connecticut State for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening at Silfen Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
