No. 24 Women’s Swimming Finishes Fifth at NESCAC Championships

Vaughn Ammon

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Olivia Haskell (Norwalk, Conn.) won the 100-yard freestyle and swam on a record-breaking relay as the No. 24 Connecticut College women's swimming team finished fifth at the NESCAC Championships on Sunday evening.

Williams won its sixth straight title by finishing with 1,873 points, while Tufts finished second with 1,439.5 points. Amherst (1,322), Bates (1,021), Connecticut College (932.5), Wesleyan (899), Bowdoin (836), Middlebury (730), Colby (445.5), Trinity (408.5), and Hamilton (397) rounded out the team standings.

In the final race of the meet, sophomore Maddie Ford (Acton, Mass.) anchored the 400 free relay to a runner-up time of 3:26.95 to solidify the fifth-place finish in the overall team standings. Sophomore Kenzie Healy (Westport, Conn.), freshman Vaughn Ammon (Franklin, Tenn.) and Haskell also comprised the group which provisionally qualified for NCAAs and also broke the school record. The previous standard of 3:27.10 was established in 2017 by Julia Klier, Haskell, Juliette Lee, and Lily Gribbel.

The Camels continued to dominate the sprint freestyle events and accumulated 73 points in the 100 free. After touching the wall in 50.66 seconds during the preliminary round, Haskell was victorious in the finals of the event by punching in a time of 51.15. Both marks met the NCAA provisional standard, while her time in the prelims fell just two one-hundredths shy of one of the longest-standing school records in the books. Kate Kavenock registered a time of 50.64 all the way back in 2005.

In addition to Haskell, Ford and Ammon also scored in the 100 free. Ford recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 51.59 to finish fifth, while Ammon was 11th in 52.16. All in all, the Camels racked up 208 points in the three sprint freestyle events alone over the course of three days.

A sixth and final NCAA "B" cut time in an individual event was recorded by Andrea Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) in the 200 fly. The sophomore finished the race fifth overall in 2:05.13 after recording a mark of 2:04.33 in the prelims.

Connecticut College will next compete at a NESCAC Invitational at Middlebury on Sunday, Feb. 24 before expecting to send a group to the NCAA Championships next month.
