Women’s Track & Field Wins Coast Guard Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Shannon Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) matched a school record and was among three Camels to place first in an event to help the Connecticut College women's track & field team win the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Camels captured the team title by finishing with 149 points in a three-team race. Trinity placed second with 147 points, while Coast Guard finished third with 137 points.

Kennedy matched her program standard in the long jump which she established at the 2018 NESCAC Championships by leaping 17-feet, 11.50-inches. The mark also bettered her nearest competitor by six inches. In addition, the senior added six more points to the overall team score by placing third in the high jump and clearing the bar at 4-11.

Freshman Erin Fitzpatrick (Sterling, Mass.) and junior Leila Alfaro (Charleston, S.C.) were also event winners for the Camels. Fitzpatrick finished the 100-meter dash in 12.79 seconds, while Alfaro was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.27. Furthermore, Fitzpatrick was part of a 4x100-meter relay squad which placed third by navigating the track in a season-best time of 50.32. The group also included Haley Vanty (Berlin, Conn.), who ran the anchor leg, as well as senior Kaitlin Thomas (Orange, Conn.) and freshman Veronique Dhont (Englewood, N.J.).

In addition, five Camels registered runner-up performances in their respective events to contribute to the overall team victory. Freshman Tarvis Hintlian (Winchester, Mass.) punched in a time of 4:51.25 in the 1,500-meter run and senior Mimi Crawford (Allentown, N.J.) completed the steeplechase in 13:07.97 on the track, while Thomas leaped 33-feet, 4.75-inches in the triple jump, junior Koko Mensah (Orange, N.J.) threw the shot put 44-6, and senior Emily Senatore (Norwell, Mass.) notched a mark of 134-2 in the discus throw in the field.

Connecticut College will remain in New London to host the Silfen Invitational on Friday, Apr. 12 and Saturday, Apr. 13.
