SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Avery Light (Sudbury, Mass.) smashed 11 kills in her collegiate debut and sophomore Katie Howley (Scituate, Mass.) nearly registered a double-double to propel the Connecticut College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Western New England at the AHLC Gym on Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-20, 29-27 and 25-17.

After surrendering the first point, Connecticut College (1-0) went ahead and held on to win a tight opening set. The Camels led by a single point at 21-20 down the stretch before senior Maddie Rust (Austin, Texas) sparked a 4-0 run to close it out by spiking a pass from junior Grace McGee (Portland, Ore.).

Western New England (0-5) got off to a strong start and jumped ahead by a 9-3 score in the second set, but the Camels rallied and took a 17-16 lead on a pair of back-to-back aces by McGee. Sophomore Emma Hewlin (Los Gatos, Calif.) then closed out the set with three aces of her own to put the visitors in prime position to win their first match of the season.

The momentum for Connecticut College continued into the third and final set. Down by a 5-4 score, the visitors embarked on a 15-5 run with Hewlin and Light leading the charge. Hewlin had three kills and an ace during the ensuing six rallies before Light added three kills of her own during the hot stretch to help the Camels pull away and seal the win.
