NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's water polo team fell to Monmouth by a 25-10 score in the opening match of the CWPA Division III Championships for both schools on Friday afternoon.
Monmouth (6-10), which never trailed in the contest, scored the first goal at the 6:41 mark of the first quarter and saw the Camels pull even twice before making a run. Becca Dabrowski, who racked up 11 goals in the contest to earn Player of the Game recognition, sparked a 5-0 run for the Fighting Scots when she fired home the ball with 1:40 remaining in the opening quarter.
The visitors outscored the Camels by a 7-1 margin in the second quarter to begin pulling away and then 8-2 in the third to put the game out of reach. Sophomore captain Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and netted four overall in the final frame, but the 19-5 hole through three quarters of action was too deep to dig out of.
Lopez finished the game with five goals to lead the way for Connecticut College. Junior Hannah Rogers (Kingston, Pa.) tallied two markers, and classmate Ginny McCool (Delray Beach, Fla.) made six saves in net during the first and third quarters.
Connecticut College (7-9) will next face Utica College in the consolation side of the bracket tomorrow morning at 11:15 a.m.
